Don’s Bakery: A Muskoka must-visit
Of life’s simple pleasures, few are as tasty as a freshly baked pastry or a loaf of bread. Whether you are dealing with a busy week or spending the weekend at the lake, yummy treats are something you should never give up on. That's when Don’s Bakery comes in handy!
Located at Portage Landing, this bakery has become a tradition amongst locals and those visiting the Muskoka area. Don’s Bakery was founded in 1947 and, for the last 75 years, has been dedicated to serving fresh, handmade baked goods using the finest ingredients every spring and summer. Outlooking the Bala Falls, just between Moon River and Lake Muskoka, the bakery is the perfect spot for you to snack on some delicious food while watching the water tumble over the rocks in one of the most delightful places in Muskoka.
Serving anything from donuts to buns to pies, Don’s Bakery is particularly known for its butter tarts and scones (some call them “Don’s Buns”, but I have been corrected by in-store staff). While they continue to bake these classics every year, they make sure to innovate and always look for new recipes to captivate their loyal and new customers. We’ve gathered some of customers’ favourite picks, so you know what to look for on your next visit:
- Scones
- Butter tarts
- Lemon Cranberry Cake
- Apple Fritters
- Cinnamon Rolls
- Brownies
- Carrot Cake
The Bakery is known not only for its delicious treats but also for always giving back to the community. When the pandemic first showed its impacts on peoples’ lives, Don’s was quick to launch its Safe Food Initiative, providing people with safe access to fresh and frozen produce, dairy, eggs, meat and baked goods. The shop also has a fundraising program, in which they support and work together with different initiatives to meet their financial goals.
Whether you want to grab a bite after a long E-Foil session or just something to snack on by the lake, wearing your favourite Muskoka hoodie, you can visit Don’s Bakery at 311 Muskoka District Road in Bala, ON. Make sure to stop at The Muskoka Store on your way there, at 2266 Highway 11 North, Gravenhurst, or access our website https://themuskokastore.com/
